Scripture
The
baptized devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the
breaking of bread and the prayers. (Acts
2:42-47)
Reflection
We see here
the earliest church, in the immediate aftermath of the outpouring of the Holy
Spirit at Pentecost and the Apostle Peter’s spirit-filled preaching that
resulted in some 4000 persons being baptized! Talk about an instantaneous
mega-church! We see what the Church across time has been doing for 2000 years:
teaching, worship, prayer, and fellowship. This is Martin Luther’s notion of
the church as the mutual conversation and consolation of the brothers and sisters (not just, “What are you doing for
lunch?”). We are the church when we do these things.
Prayer
Gracious God,
Continue to gather us around your word and sacraments, and empower us to be the
Body of Christ for one another and for the world. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
