Scripture
“And remember, I am
with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20b)
Reflection
If the Gospel of Matthew has an overarching theme, it is
“God with us.” It is in Matthew where Jesus is named Emmanuel, which means “God is with us” (Matthew 1:23). Our verse
for today cites the last words Jesus speaks to his disciples before his
Ascension (as recorded in Matthew).
A few weeks ago we observed Good Shepherd Sunday, when we
once again sang the beloved Psalm 23. In the exact center of Psalm 23 are the
words, “For you are with me . . .” Jesus as our Good Shepherd is with us
always, just as he promised to his disciples.
Prayer
Dearest Jesus, Thank you for your promise that you are with
us always, to the end of the age. In your name. Amen.
