Scripture
. . . [Jesus] breathed on them and said to them, “Receive
the Holy Spirit.” (John 20:22)
Reflection
If the account in Acts 2 is the earth-shaking Pentecost (see
Wednesday’s reflection), this is the quiet Pentecost. In Acts 2, thousands from
throughout the world are gathered together in Jerusalem; in John 20, it’s the ten
frightened disciples on the evening of the Resurrection. In Acts 2, the effects
of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit are bold preaching and thousands repenting
and turning to Christ; in John 20, the ten find Thomas, who went missing, and
they all gather a week later, again behind closed doors, waiting for Jesus to
reassure them.
The Holy Spirit comes to us in various ways. Everyone’s
experience is particular and unique. There is no “litmus test” for receiving—or
manifesting—the Holy Spirit.
Prayer
Holy Spirit, Thank you that you come to us individually and
uniquely. However you come to us, send us into the world proclaiming your love.
In Jesus’ name. Amen.
