". . . a burning fire shut up in my bones . . ."

Scripture

If I say, "I will not mention him, or speak any more in his name," then within me there is something like a burning fire shut up in my bones; I am weary with holding it in, and I    cannot. (Jeremiah 20:9)

Reflection

Our prophet experiences nothing but trouble and rejection for speaking the word of the Lord. He is having something of a “wrestling match” with God, which reminds me of Jacob    wrestling with “the man”—the angel—God—at the River Jabbok  (Genesis 32:22ff). Jeremiah accuses God of “enticing” and “overpowering” him. He protests that he has become a “laughingstock” among the people for his devotion to God.

My experience with the call of God is that it is irresistible. I count myself lucky not to be in a context like Jeremiah. At the same time, I sometimes wonder if the “burning fire shut up in my bones” could ever be quenched.

Prayer

Gracious God, Thank you for your servant, Jeremiah, and his witness to your burning call. Inspire all of us with your love and passion. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Pastor David
