Scripture

. . . for you are with me . . . (Psalm 23:4b)

Reflection

It might be safe to say that Psalm 23 is the most beloved of all the psalms. While all the verses are memorable and we might be hard-pressed to come up with one in particular that is our favorite, the psalmist gives us a clue regarding what is most important. Coming exactly in the center of this psalm is the phrase, “. . . for you are with me . . .” In the original Hebrew, 26 words precede this phrase and 26 words follow it. The number 26 represents the holy name, Yahweh, which, in Hebrew numerology, is 26. The holy name is the first and (almost) last word in the psalm. In all circumstances of life, God is with us. In addition, prior to this central phrase, God is referred to in the third-person, either as "the Lord" or "He." In this central phrase, we speak to God personally, in second-person, you: ". . . for you are with me." Our God who is with us through all circumstances of life is our personal God.

Prayer

Holy God, Thank you that you are my God and that “you are with me” in all circumstances of life. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
